Frequently Asked Questions
What is a compounding pharmacy?
A compounding pharmacy prepares customized medications prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider. Unlike commercially manufactured drugs, compounded medications are made specifically for an individual’s unique needs—such as tailored dosages, allergy-friendly formulations, or alternative delivery methods (e.g., creams, troches, or flavored liquids).
What’s the difference between a 503A and a 503B pharmacy?
A 503A compounding pharmacy creates medications for individual patients based on a specific prescription from a licensed prescriber. A 503B outsourcing facility can produce larger batches for office use or hospital distribution. Our pharmacy operates under Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, meaning we compound medications only after receiving a valid patient-specific prescription.
Why would my provider prescribe a compounded medication?
Your provider may prescribe a compounded medication if:
How do I get a compounded medication?
A valid prescription from your licensed healthcare provider is required. Your provider can send it to us through our secure provider portal.
Can I order directly without a prescription?
No. Federal law requires that all compounded medications from a 503A pharmacy be dispensed only with a valid, patient-specific prescription.
How long does it take to compound and ship my medication?
Most orders are prepared and shipped within 5-7 business days after receiving your prescription. Complex compounds or sterile preparations may require additional processing time.
Are compounded medications FDA-approved?
No compounded medication is individually FDA-approved. However, all ingredients we use come from FDA-registered suppliers and USP-grade or better sources. Our pharmacy follows USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards and state board regulations to ensure quality, purity, and safety.
How do you ensure quality and accuracy?
Every compounded prescription undergoes a multi-step quality control process as part of our quality assurance program. LFG Compounding quality checks include formulation review and measurement checks, 3rd party testing, pharmacist verification, and final inspection for accuracy and quality assurance
What if I have a reaction or side effect?
Contact your prescriber immediately if you experience any unexpected outcomes. You can also reach out to our pharmacy team.
Do you ship medications?
Yes. We are considered a “closed” pharmacy that primarily ships all prescriptions to either the patient's home of record, or the patient’s clinic upon request. Some prescriptions may require a signature upon delivery.
Can I talk to a pharmacist?
Of course! Our pharmacists are available during business hours for consultation regarding your medication, dosing, storage, or any questions you may have.
Does your compounding pharmacy accept insurance?
LFG Compounding is a private pay compounding pharmacy.
How should I store my compounded medication?
Storage instructions are included on every label. Common examples:
What if I have an allergy or sensitivity?
Let your prescriber know! We can often exclude dyes, gluten, lactose, preservatives, or other allergens. Common alternatives include hypoallergenic bases and dye-free capsules.
Can I transfer an existing compound prescription to you?
Yes! Patient rights ensure they have a right to choose their pharmacy.
